Spc. Michael D. Rivera was just 22 years old, and one of three soldiers that lost their lives to an IED in Iraq on March 7, 2007. Michael was a GasBuddy that posted under the name "Viggrant".

To the Memory of the Life of Specialist Michael D. Rivera, US Army. This is what is represented by the Flag Folding Ceremony:

Meaning of flag-folding Program

The flag-folding ceremony represents the same religious principles on which our great country was originally founded.

The portion of the flag denoting honor is the canton of blue containing the stars representing states our veterans served in uniform. The canton field of blue dresses from left to right and is inverted only when draped as a pall on the casket of a veteran who has served our country honorably in uniform.

In the U.S. Armed Forces, at the ceremony of retreat, the flag is lowered, folded in a triangle fold and kept under watch throughout the night as a tribute to our nation’s honored dead. The next morning it is brought out and, at the ceremony of reveille, run aloft as a symbol of our belief in the resurrection of the body.

Symbols for the Folds of the Flag

The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life.

The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.

The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks, and who gave a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.

The fourth fold represents our weaker nature; as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace, as well as in times of war, for His divine guidance.

The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong.”

The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The seventh fold is a tribute to our armed forces, for it is through the armed forces that we protect our country and our flag against all enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.

The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor our mother, for whom it flies on Mother’s Day.

The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood, for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded.

The 10th fold is a tribute to father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since he or she was first born.

The 11th fold, in the eyes of Hebrew citizens, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

The 12th fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Ghost.

When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, “In God We Trust.”

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it has the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under Gen. George Washington and the sailors and Marines who served under Capt. John Paul Jones and were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the U.S. Armed Forces, preserving for us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today.

The source and the date of origin of this Flag Folding Procedure is unknown, however some sources attribute it to the Gold Star Mothers of America while others to an Air Force chaplain stationed at the United States Air Force Academy. Others consider it to be an urban legend. It is provided as a patriotic service to all.

Did Specialist Rivera leave his home of Nevada when he enlisted into the US Army? If so, this is called a "home of record" Nevada Veteran. This is the only person who can call themselves a "Nevada Veteran." Everybody else is just a "Veteran."

Around 1967, or so, the State of Nevada removed all veteran benefits for her "Nevada Veterans," except, a free fishing license that can only be applied for and used inside the State of Nevada, while you are stationed "Outside of the State of Nevada." Yup, that is true. All "Nevada Tax-Dollars" that are paid for by Nevada Citizens, and to be shared with Federal Funds, does not go to the Honor or Memory of Nevada Veterans. Any Veteran from any other state (to include Nevada Veterans) get the same benefits from the State of Nevada.)

Examples: California Home of Record Veterans get to buy a house with two percentage points shaved off of their mortgage (saving them money), California Tax Dollars that used to shave their tuition down to $25 per unit), if disabled, tuition benefits for their children, etc., etc. A Nevada Veteran, or any "other" veteran does not get these breaks, if they come to California. Yet, if a California Veteran, or any "other" veteran comes to Nevada, Nevada tax dollars are spent on them, as if they were a "Nevada Veteran." What does this mean?

I believe that "Nevada Cemetaries" (not "federal" veterans cemeteries" in Nevada paid for by the US Taxpayer's money) and paid for with the majority of the Nevada Taxpayer's Money, should only inter Nevada Veterans on a first come and first served basis, with 10% of the gravesites "saved" for use by out of state veterans, on a first come first served basis. This will ensure that every next of kin of every service member who left Nevada to serve their country, WILL NEVER BE TOLD THAT THERE ARE NO MORE GRAVES LEFT!

I also believe that the Nevada Veterans Nursing Homes should be ran the same way, which they are not!

I also believe that the Nevada Department of Veterans Affairs (Not the US Department of Veterans Affairs) should be chaired by a "Nevada Veteran" (not by anybody else. In other words, not a buddy of the Governor). All other members of the Board should also be Nevada Veterans, which is not a part of the law (the statutes) that pertain to them. The last member, a "member of the public," should be a person who has no military experience, at all, NOT EVEN A MEMBER OF THEIR FAMILY (this would allow a non-biased person who might actually even have some common sense in what they approve/disapprove, etc.)

I am not going to fill in this post with my complaints. There is no "Veterans Preference" is the State of Nevada. The federal government gives 5 points for service and 10 points for disability to all veterans (seeking state/federal employment, as an example. Almost every state in the Union doubles the percentage for their veterans, making it 10/20. If a Nevada Veteran goes and seeks state-employment, they get the lower percentage point. In Nevada, their is no doubling for "state veterans."

I am talking about programs paid for by Nevada Taxpayers, whose tax money goes to Carson City. I am not talking about US Tax Dollars that go to DC and then come back to Nevada for federal programs.

Nevada's veterans programs are a scam. I can still remember how our Governor (not the current one) stood with Harry Reed and declared how much they love "our veterans." Yet, when the first serviceman from Nevada, a Marine Corporal died in the First Gulf War, Governor Gwinn went on TV asking for charitable-donations for his family -- while at the same time he sent everybody in Nevada a $75 check as a refund of taxes paid.

Your donation, was then directed to some guy in Reno, that was not an organization, or a tax-exempt entity, for distribution to "our" veterans. Who is this guy? Where is this guy? And, where did the money go? Why was their no accountability?

REALLY? IF, NEVADA LOVES THEIR VETERANS SO MUCH, I SAY: "PROVE IT!"

Its like when the Mayor, at the time, of Las Vegas, was shown that parts of a solar panel, as debris, found on the ground near the solar-plant he was commemorating, was pointed out that it was supposed to have been manufactured in the USA and not in Mexico, said some lame comment like, "they better not be," and when asked if they should all be checked, said some lame comment like, "No."

------------------------------------------------------------------------
And, to Specialist Rivera, from your battle-buddies, of all wars and conflicts, we don't need to thank you for your service. WE ARE "PROUD" of what you have done for this country; whether born into or adopted by you (no matter your "home of record."

We ask so much from these brave men & women, yet as a Nation we give far too little to them for their sacrifices. I am honored to dedicate my April 8th show to Specialist Michael D. Rivera http://www.blogtalkradio.com/southern-sense/2014/04/08/defending-the-republic-candidate-meka-childs

We can never pay adequate homage to our heroes. God bless them all.
