Have you tried a knee brace? Use a knee brace but see an ortho doc asap. The biggest thing is to get a referral to an ortho doc for professional instructions, then go to PT if he instructs you to. Please don't try to self treat knee injuries.

Some love the Icy Hot, some suffer worse pain, so check with your doctor or therapist before trying it. Ice packs and/or heat can help but don't leave them on for more than 20 minutes at a time.

I can really sympathize with knee cap pain. I was a baseball catcher and umpire for several years and my knees have paid a big price. I developed severe osteo arthritis in both knees and eventually had both knees replaced. My left knee cap was so badly deformed that the surgeon was not able to save it.

I found some relief from cortisone injections, but that was only a temporary fix. I have recently lost a considerable amount of weight and that has helped my legs and knees more than anything else.

I have the feeling that except for general tips this is such an individual issue that to give a specific solution may not be possible.

I just can tell you, that yes it does hurt, and I do wish you well.

I had the slipped patella (knee cap) in 2005 from an accident (fell backwards from tall place onto my knee), and it just flared up again last week from riding stationary bike too long after not riding for a while. And then I ran in the water during water class (stupid!) exacerbating the injury and giving me even more pain that has be hobbling. My other problem of nerve compression causing sciatica on other leg is making getting around quite difficult.

Mine is quite painful, too, and pain runs down my calf/shin,too. I went to Physical Therapy in 2005 and have been trying to do the same exercises. It's a slow healer. The exercises are to build the muscles around, above, and below the knee to give it support and the patella will slip back into place.

I've been trying heat, too, but I think I'm gonna use something like icy hot on it tonight to see if it helps the muscles relax.

What are you doing for yours?
