A doctor told me that you will still have reflux even if you take a GERD med, it just takes out the acidity...and you need that acid to break down your vitamins and food. He recommended going to the health food store and get hydrochloric acid tablets...his opinion was that when you have reflux, you NEED MORE acid--it is the body's way of telling you it needs more acid for digestion!
All doctors have their opinion, but with drug companies pushing and bribing most doctors, his theory may be true! I've worked at several doctors' offices, and you would not believe what the drug representatives do to push their products! THey bring in hundreds of dollars in food--food from expensive restaurants--and they bring enough for the entire staff too! Plus they give away handfuls of pens, Rx pads (with the doctor's info already printed on it), Post-It notepads, clocks, gadgets--you name it--they give it! AND you see the advertisements on TV! THAT is why you pay soooo much for your prescriptions!

And the Zantac/Axid/Pepcid type meds were considered revolutionary compared to what came before. I commented that "Zantac is the best thing to happen to Glaxo since they grew penicillin in jars during WWII."
>The over the counter >form of prilosec (omeprazole) is half of the presciption dose
The highest prescription dose (40 mg) is twice that of Prilosec OTC (20 mg). Prilosec also comes in 20 mg and 10 mg dosage forms.
>and can be more expensive depending on what your insurance co-pay >is (if you have insurance).
And if you have a Section 125 cafeteria plan, you can buy the OTC version tax-free. Or you can pay your co-pay and get tax-free reimbursement.

I don't remember how old I was, but one of my late father's cousins came to visit.
She needed the old baking soda treatment.
I was very reluctant to give her her baking soda... "that's going to taste terrible!"
My Mom brought her the glass of water and baking soda.

If that doesn't work, try Zegerid (baking soda plus generic Prilosec, it requires an Rx).

catspaw - have you changed your diet and lessened acidic foods and overeating?
You probably already know it, but in case you do not, Barret's esophagus can be pre-cancerous and must be watched. Possibly why the Dr wants to ensure no excess acid production to cause reflux.

I stopped all acid reflux meds.....Nexium, Acifex, Protonix and 3 Generic brands. I had a bleeding ulcer and very bad pain. The pills did nothing to help! I read where they can destroy bones. Osteoporosis was beginning to show in the test I had. Right away I stopped. Now I get the pain once in awhile but not as often. Go figure. I told my PDoc and she said I should go and start them again. This time I will listen to MY body and skip it!

Has anybody ever heard of being cured of acid reflux, GERD or Barret's?
I had all of them for possibly as long as 20 years, (only diagnosed about 7 years ago though) and have been taking Pariet, Nexium, Prilosec, etc. ever since.
In mid August, I was away for a week and forgot to take my meds with me, but found I didn't need them. Since then, I've only NEEDED meds about 3 times, although my doctor said to keep taking them until my next scheduled gastroscopy).
This seems odd not to need them since there were times over the years that it would keep me awake all night, and make me lose my cookies if I didn't take the meds. And now, all of a sudden, no problem.

I had Acid Reflux, and nothing helped until the DR. gave me Nexium.. I have been taking it ever since, and no problem anymore.. My stomach produces too much acid, and the Nexium was a god-send!
However, I don't eat spicy foods, or late at night.. Again, that didn't help me before the Nexium.. Best little purple pill ever, in my book!

What's wrong with good old baking soda?
Baking soda works a thousand % better than Tums or any of those other things for me and has for a good 50 years.
Even a 1/2 teaspoon in a glass of water works for me.
Water "gives" me both a dry mouth and acid reflux, whereas putting the 1/2 to 1 teaspoon in a glass of water soothes wonderfully.
All you wizards try the baking soda next time. I'd stake your life on it working wonderfully for all of you!

I had extremely bad heart burn for about 5 years every day of the week. Now it is gone. I did one of the hardest things I have ever done. I quit smoking and started eating healthy. I used to eat fast food and junk food all the time, and my doctor told me how to fix the problem. I listen and he was right.

For all those that get heartburn/acid refulx, try two things. #1 - stop drinking store bought OJ and juice it yourself. I recently starting doing that and have not had hearburn since. #2 - try eating organic bananas to help relieve symptoms. Works for me!

Yes, I've had the same problem with beef broth. I think it's the amount of acid in the soup becuase I don't have any problem with a milk-based tomato soup but I DO with some water-based tomato soups.

Wiseconsumer, take a look below, Captainfingy recommends NOT drinking teas because of the caffeine.
I've found dairy products, particularly milk or ice cream, help a lot.
To what he posted as the Rx meds that help, I'd like to add Pariet. I've bee using that for a few years now.

I've found when I've had reflux..especially bad enough to get the lable GERD.... it's once you get inflamed in your esophagus...it takes days to reheal. i find those days in between nothing seems to help. I often find things that you would think would be soothing some hot teas and hot soups make it worse! Tyring to eat minimally and relax is the best answer...

I am a gastroenterologist, here are a few tips:
Things that make relfux worse: nictoine, alcohol, caffeine, any food known to cause these symptoms for any individual person, strenuous exercise, aspirin, any ibuprofen (aleve, advil, motrin etc).
Things to help allieviate symptoms: avoidance of the above things, raising the head of the bed, don't eat before lying down, don't eat at least six hours before lying down.
Prilosec/Prevacid/Protonix/Nexium are all better than zantac/axid/pepcid type medications. The over the counter form of prilosec (omeprazole) is half of the presciption dose and can be more expensive depending on what your insurance co-pay is (if you have insurance).

I have a simple, cheap recipe for reflux that works for some people: Drink a glass of water (not soda, coffee or anything else!) after you eat or drink. That's it!! Some reflux seems to be caused by food (or sugars, etc in drinks) not getting all the way down into the stomach before the body starts to process it. The water helps insure that all ingested ingredients get all the way down into the stomach for processing.
This 'cure' won't work overnite, but it has worked on me and several other people I've told. Pros: i'ts pretty cheap and the body needs the water. Cons: ?????

big booper, Doesn't that procedure have a high risk and, unless they have improved it, doesn't it stand a big chance of failing again?
Do you have indigestion and heartburn when you eat early, eat small amounts and no spicy or raw or sweet foods? It's worth changing the diet and not lying down after eating for over 4 hours and having smaller meals throughout the day before considering surgery. If you could control the acid reflux in this way along with the meds, then you could just keep a check on the esophagus with Dr each year.
Have you tried nexium (expensive, but it helps a lot of people). Protonix didn't help me as much as prevacid. (I'll be switching to prilosec in a few months cause my Rx plan will not cover all of my brand name drugs that do not yet have generics.)
Let us know what you have tried and if you go forward with the surgery.
CB
ps I may have missed all the things you have tried for this as the string is so long.

Avoid spicy, greasy foods, stay upright 1 hour after eating. Eat smaller meals, more frequently. Insurance companies not wanting to pay for prescription meds now. Be careful long term severe reflux can lead to Barrett's esophagus cancer. elevating the head of your bed can help. For severe chronic there is a surgery Nissan Fundoplication the sphincter is loose and allows the backflow. This is for extreme cases. As always lose weight get checked for Hiatal Hernia.

I was on Zantac 150 and then Aciphex for years and my Dr. switched my Rx to Protonix about 16 months ago. Protonix works the best of the three for me.
The only side effect for me is that I must eat early [before 7PM] each evening and cannot tolerate peppers. But I no longer have burning or annual [or more frequent] scopes and the dilation of my lower esophagus.

ccb711, I tried a modified low carb diet, last year, and I'm throwing away my famotidine. I've had problems, for years, with indigestion, especially when eating things like pizza. I eat lots of jalapenoes, and that doesn't cause it, but I'm giving up ice cream, soda pop and ketchup and I feel much better. I don't know that I had acid reflux, per se, but I've suspected for some time that I had IBS.
