I would love to see a playoff system put in place. I actually have a good idea for one. What do you think about this topic?

Well, in Div-1 FCS, they have a 20 team, soon to be 24 Team Playoff, Advance, Win out, you can be Champion, not nearly the politics, your Fate is in your teams hands.

Int he BCS(FBS), The actual Best teams may not play for the title...

Well a four team playoff is better than a no team playoff! I hope it jumps to eight pretty quickly!

I think this post season is another argument for a playoff system. I was traveling and only got to see the highlights, but that championship game must have been ugly to sit and watch. Even for Alabama fans!

Let me make this proposal for this season's teams if there were a 12 team playoff system in place. I am using the current BCS standing to place the teams in the bracket.

All conference champions decided by Sat. 12/3/11

First round byes to top four seeds: 1. LSU, 2. Alabama, 3. Oklahoma St. 4. Stanford

First round games to be played by 12/10/11:
#12 Baylor at #5 Oregon
#11 Virginia Tech at #6 Arkansas
#10 Wisconsin at #7 Boise State
#9 South Carolina at #8 Kansas State

Some intriguing match ups in the first round!

Second round games played by 12/17 and hosted by the higher seeds and the lowest remaining seed plays at the highest seed and so on.

Semi finals played by 12/24 at current BCS games sites.

Championship game played on 1/9/12.

All other bowl games are still taking place for other eligible teams.

What was the top reason the college presidents point to for not having a playoff? That's right, it would extend the season too long.

Yet this year, the last game will be played on January 9th and there will be games nearly every day from the 2nd until it finally ends. By my count, that's at least 10 or 12 teams that will be playing after January 1st, the traditional ending date for the season (Jan 2 this year because of the Sunday holiday). So play the top 4 on the 2nd and have the winners square off a week later.

Only an academic could fight that . . . .

The FBS teams which compete for the BCS Title could develop some sort of system like the FCS teams which complete in a playoff system now for the NCAA Football Championship.

Technically all D-1 Teams elect to compete in one or the other as the FBS(Bowl Series) & FCS(Championship Series) are both from the Division 1 schools. Formally referred to as 1-A & 1-AA several years back.

Could it work though? Would the same money be there? Could the earlier rounds each be a bowl that lead up to the title or should we allow the FBS teams to decide at some point in each season to "continue" in the "bowl direction or elect to a playoff?

How about this we STILL HOLD MOST OF THE BOWLS, must qualify like always, but the Top 16 or Top 8 teams can elect to compete in a playoff instead and we create a Bowl-Like promotion for those games?

So how much longer will the current Bull Crap System continue to survive?
I say that it will be gone and a playoff system of some sort will be in place within the next 5 years!

Looking at the fiasco with the BCS possibilities today - a playoff system looks really good.

Take the top 8 or 16 teams and run a playoff. If the BCS bowls still want to be the big-boy-money-makers, than they can rotate championship game. (I think the Fiesta Bowl has demonstrated they can drop to the lower bowl level).

The opening rounds will have to be played at the higher seed's home field. Sending them to the other bowls won't work since they won't be able to get enough attendance. I was able to go to the Rose Bowl this year for the 1st time and if I had to pay for two previous bowl/playoff road trips, the average season ticket holder can't afford that many "bowl" trips in one season.

For all those teams who don't make the playoff, they can go to the bowls like they do now.

I think there should be a 12 team playoff and then let there be as many other bowls as companies are willing to pay for! It doesn't bother me a bit that there are so many bowl games. I am disappointed that football season doesn't overlap with the beginning of the baseball season! I do have college hockey that helps get me through!

I have no problem with a ton of bowl games as I love to watch football no matter who is playing. Why not however in the bowl games on the 1st pit #'s 1 and 4 against each other and #s 2 and 3, then the winners play for the title in the "BCS" game. No matter how many teams you put into the playoffs there will always be someone who thinks someone got left out. For basketball there were 65 teams (I can't remember the new number) but there is always someone out there saying some school should have been included. If you say 4 teams, then someone who is #5 will gripe, if you put 8 teams then someone who is #9 will gripe, same for 16 or 32....

First thing that needs to be done is to eliminate some of these bowl games. It's ridiculous!! .500 teams getting into a bowl game?? They have no right nor do they deserve it. 10-12 bowl games at the max!

If TCU does manage to hold on and beat the Badgers, does that put another hole in the current BCS system? I think it does! Of course I don't care much for the BCS anyways.

The FCS (The NCAA Division 1 - Football Championship Series) has expanded it's playoff to include now 20 teams beginning this year. Division 1 schools can elect to play in the FBS (Football Bowl Series) or the FCS.

FCS was formally known as the Division 1-AA and FBS as Division 1-A, technically Subdivisions in Football for D-1 schools. All Division 1 schools compete equally in other sports.

The Smaller Schools also have a playoff System, Div 2, Div 3 and NAIA.

How would it work to convert the Bowl System into a playoff? Would the Top 8 in the BCS have playoff and Opt out of the bowls or may those games "playoff bowls"? Maybe 1 plays 8, 2 plays 7, 3 plays 6, 4 plays 5, then the winners advance highest seed verses lowest remaining??

Hornetsp, let me be the first to say that you were right on about Boise beating TCU. Like many others, I thought TCU was too good in all phases of the game to let Boise beat them. In the end TCU just made way too many mistakes to win.

I'm not sure if they could duplicate the win if they played again tonight, but they got it when it mattered. Congrats to Boise State on joining my Ohio State Buckeyes as the only teams to finish a season 14-0. Of course, we'll have a third team join when either Bama or Texas wins later this week.

So are you trying to say the Buckeyes are ducking Boise state? Really? Have you now seen their future schedule? Over the next several years the Buckeyes have games scheduled with Miami, Virginia tech, Oklahoma, Cincinnati, Cal and Tennessee. Also remember, the last four years they played USC and Texas. So don't even think about saying they are ducking them. That's ridiculous.

Take a look at the Florida nonconference schedule. THERE'S a team That's ducking opponents.

Also, collusion is when an entire group of entities get together and as a group, decide to do, or not do, something. Any decisions to not play Boise state are made individually, not collectively. That is not collusion. That's their RIGHT.

Duffer36, I disagree. I think that Boise will knock off TCU.

I remind people they are offering a national televised game and big money at a big time opponents place. So far (according to USA today a few weeks ago) no ones has taken them up on the offer. Schools like Florida, Nebraska, USC, and Ohio State has openings but no takers.

People cannot keep saying they are playing anyone when the Big Schools are ducking them. Saying they get nothing from playing them.

It is actually callusion and people dont want to give credability to the program.

I don't believe Boise will get a BCS bid this year but I almost hope they do. They will get their comeuppance if they have to play Florida or TCU or Cincinnati. Those teams will put up tons of points on them.

At the end of the season, we really don't know who is number 1. Any team that goes undefeated is going to be tough in any game. One can theorize that the SEC is the toughest conference and all that, but tell that to Utah and they won't believe you. There is absolutely no way to tell who has the best team and that goes for Boise State also. A playoff is the only way to tell who has the absolute bragging rights for being the top team. Until then, it is hypothetical at the most.

Look at it this way. What happened all spring and summer this year? People across this country argued about who should have been in the BCS title game, Oklahoma or Texas, right? That kept college football first and foremost in the minds of people. All that buzz creates more interest in the game when the season rolls around which in turn translates into higher attendance, more ad revenue, and most importantly...MORE MONEY FOR THE NCAA. Take that away by having a playoff and once the playoffs are over, what happens? People forget about college football and the excitement dies off.

Sorry duffer, you usually are pretty good with your points and perspectives, but I certainly don't think that arguing about who should be playing in what bowl game is a very good reason for keeping the absolutely ridiculous BCS system!

Yes, I am serious. I don't want to see a playoff because I think it would be BAD for college football. What is the only college sport without a playoff? Bowl series football. And what is the ONLY sport that gets fans in such a fervor in the offseason arguing about who SHOULD have been #1, or who SHOULD have been playing in certain bowl games? Bowl series football, that's what. Create a playoff with a "true" national champ and that all disappears. College football then becomes nothing more than college tennis with bigger crowds.

Get on ESPN's college football page a vote in their poll for a college football 16 team playoff system! Right now it's 83% for a playoff system. I didn't realize that 17% of the country was that stupid!

You don't understand. UC (or University of Criminals) is a much hated place and with their illustrious football heritage, they have no right to be in the national championship picture. It is a sign of the times, however.

I love this! I guess congress has solved all of the other problems our nation faces!

Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, who has introduced legislation that would prevent the NCAA from labeling a game a national championship unless it’s the outcome of a playoff system, said that efforts to tinker with the BCS were bound to fail.

“It’s like communism,” he said at the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s commerce, trade and consumer protection subcommittee hearing. “You can’t fix it.”

If there were a twelve team playoff in place this year and we used the BCS system to fill the bracket, here's what it would have looked like:

#1 Oklahoma hosts the winner of #9 Boise St. vs #8 Penn State (played at PSU)

#2 Florida hosts the winner of #10 Ohio St. vs #7 Texas Tech (played at TT)

#3 Texas hosts the winner of #11 TCU vs #6 Utah (played at Utah)

#4 Alabama hosts the winner of #12 Cincinnati vs. #5 USC (played at USC)

There would have been some very interesting games in this playoff!
